Region Schluechtern

Schlüchtern combines modernism and tradition in various ways – despite its city-like character, it stayed true to its rural roots. Schlüchtern is located in the “Bergwinkel” area, embedded in the mountainous region between Rhön, Vogelsberg and Spessart. The wonderful nature surrounding Schlüchtern is characterized by various creeks, wells, forests and meadows.
Since the early days, Schlüchtern has been a hub for surrounding communities, especially in terms of health care and school education.
In the centre of Schlüchtern, historical buildings, such as the former Benedictine monastery, the town hall, the inn “Eckebäcker”, the former synagogue, and the “Lauter`sche Schlösschen”, stand side by side with modern architecture.
While Schlüchtern is a modern city, some of its beautiful little alleys still remind visitors of its medieval origins (e.g., “Schmiedsgasse” and “Linsengasse”). Especially the historical town hall, the city church Saint Michael and the Benedictine monastery represent an architecturally appealing ensemble.

For those willing to travel a bit further, the cities of Frankfurt, Hanau, Darmstadt and Würzburg promise a great variety of cultural offerings.

Well-signposted hiking trails invite you to explore the great nature surrounding Schlüchtern. Hiking maps are available at the travel office.

The Hessian cycling and hiking trail “R3” starts in Rüdesheim am Rhein, then follows the rivers of Rhein, Main and Kinzig through the cities of Schlüchtern and Fulda, and finally ends in the city of Tann (Rhön).

Another popular cycling and hiking trail is the so-called “Eselsweg”, which leads you through the beautiful nature of the Spessart region. The trail starts in Schlüchtern and ends in Großheubach am Main.

The city of Schlüchtern looks forward to welcoming you.
